Just like any other full-service airline, Asiana Airlines offer airline-protected connecting flights. Thanks to airline-protected flights, passengers are protected against flight delays, cancellations and missed connections. If a passenger experiences flight delay or cancellation, and as a result misses their connecting flight, the airline will provide a new ticket (for free).
That’s why people prefer flying with traditional airlines. Airline-protected connecting flights are better than self transfers.

- More convenient. Baggage transfer is automatic.
- Easier to book. You book several flights as a single journey.

You have a connecting flight with Asiana Airlines.
It’s possible that your flight will be operated by Asiana Airlines only. You will fly on Asiana Airlines plane. And there will be Asiana Airlines staff.

2. What If Asiana Airlines Cancels a Flight?

This happens for a number of reasons. Your flight can be cancelled due to bad weather, strikes, staffing shortages, security issues, airport congestion and various technical problems. These are just a few most popular reasons. There might be another reason altogether.
2.1 One of Your Flights Is Cancelled
Asiana Airlines is a South Korean airline.
It’s not a European airline. But still, on some of its flights you are protected under the EU law / UK law. It’s a thing that most travelers don’t know about.
According to the EU Regulation 261/2004, Asiana Airlines must:
- Offer you a choice between a new flight and full refund.
- Offer you assistance at the airport (you have a right to care).
This applies to Asiana Airlines flights departing from Europe.
If your Asiana Airlines flight is delayed or cancelled, and because of that you miss your Asiana Airlines connecting flight, you will get a new ticket to your final destination. Contact Asiana Airlines and notify them about your missed connection. If your flight departs from a European airport, you may also opt for a full refund.

2.2 All Your Flights Are Cancelled
Overall, for you as a passenger, the options are the same.
According to the EU Regulation 261/2004, Asiana Airlines must:
- Offer you a choice between a new flight and full refund.
- Offer you assistance at the airport if it’s a last-minute cancellation and you are already at the airport (you have a right to care).
This applies only to Asiana Airlines flights departing from Europe.
Refund must be paid within seven days.

2.3 Asiana Airlines Refund for Cancellation
Yes, you have a right to ask for a refund.
If your cancelled flight was from a European airport, you may opt for a full refund. In this case, you have a right to a full refund.
If you don’t want to travel anymore, or the alternate flight doesn’t fit your travel plans, ask Asiana Airlines for a refund. Refund must be paid within seven days to your bank account. According to the EU Regulation 261/2004, you don’t need to accept any vouchers from Asiana Airlines. Only money.
3. Asiana Airlines Missed Connecting Flight
Why do people miss their connecting flights?
You could miss your connecting flight because your previous flight was delayed or cancelled. You could miss a flight because of airport congestion or long lines. Or it could be a silly mistake such as waiting at the wrong gate or falling asleep while waiting for your connecting flight.
3.1 What Happens If You Miss Asiana Airlines Connection?
If it’s your fault that it happened — it’s your responsibility.
If it’s not your fault, then your airline has to take care of that. If you booked a flight from Asiana Airlines, it doesn’t even matter if the flight is operated by Asiana Airlines or not, you should contact Asiana Airlines. 3.3 Right to Care from Asiana Airlines
On Asiana Airlines flights from Europe you have a right to care.
According to the EU Regulation 261/2004 airline should provide:
- Free food and drinks in a reasonable relation to the waiting time.
- Free hotel accommodation if a stay of one or more nights is necessary.
- Free airport transfer to hotel and back.
- Plus, two telephone calls, telex or fax messages, or e-mails.
In case of Asiana Airlines, the regulation applies only to flights departing from European airports (EU, UK, EEA).
When it comes to air passenger rights, unless otherwise stated, we talk about air passenger rights in the EU, EEA and UK. When we say Europe or European, we mean EU, EEA or UK. This is done for the simplicity, since the according laws in these countries are about the same.
4. How to Book Connecting Flights with Asiana Airlines?
You can do it directly from Asiana Airlines or via a third-party.
The best way to book Asiana Airlines flights is using their official website. It’s the safest way. But not always the cheapest. If you are using flight search engines, you’ll see that certain third party flight booking websites offer better deals. You can use such a website to book Asiana Airlines flights. But make sure it’s trustworthy.

Few examples: skyscanner.net, expedia.com, momondo.com.
Pay attention to the details. Because some of these sites are only search engines, and sellers are other websites. Apart from that, they often sell both airline-protected connecting flights and self-transfer flights. If it’s a self-transfer, know that it comes with its own risks, and there are things you should take into account. Self-transfer is not the same thing as airline-protected transfer.

5. Asiana Airlines Connecting Flights: Baggage
Since Asiana Airlines is a traditional airline, everything’s very easy.
Baggage rules on connecting flights with Asiana Airlines are simple.
In short, Asiana Airlines takes care of your baggage. You check in your bag before your first flight, and the airline takes care of it throughout the journey. You don’t have to collect and recheck your bag between flights. Unless you have a self-transfer, or you’re traveling through a country that requires everyone to collect and recheck their baggage (e.g., US).
If you aren’t sure about your bag’s destination, ask at the check in counter.
5.1 Baggage Transfer: Different Airlines
What happens if there are several airlines?
What if one of your flights is operated by different airline, not Asiana Airlines? As we already talked, you may experience this, because Asiana Airlines does share some of its flights with its codeshare partners. In this situation the rules are the same — your baggage is being taken care of by an airline. In most situations you won’t have to worry about it.

5.2 Asiana Airlines Free Baggage Allowance
Baggage allowance varies — it’s not the same on all flights.
It depends on travel class, ticket type and destination.
You can check your baggage allowance using “Manage my booking” or “Find my trip” options on Asiana Airlines webpage. Log in with your booking confirmation number and your last name. You will see all the details about your flight, including your baggage allowance.
In most cases, baggage allowance is shown when booking a flight.
5.3 Economy Light
This is the cheapest option for long-haul flights.
Economy Light comes without free baggage allowance.
We see this all across the industry. Full-service traditional airlines are offering also tickets without free checked baggage allowance. The wording is also often the same — Economy Light. So, if you see this, most likely it’s without checked baggage (carry on baggage only).
Asiana Airlines doesn’t offer cabin-bag-only Economy Light fares (for now). But airline baggage policy can change. Make sure you check what is your baggage allowance, if there’s any, when you are booking a flight with any airline!

6. Connecting Flight Examples
Here are two connecting flight examples with Asiana Airlines.
6.1 Protected Connecting Flights with Asiana Airlines (Most Common)
For example, I want to fly from London to Bangkok.
I’ll use the website of Asiana Airlines to find a flight to Bangkok.
I have searched for flights for October 26, and these are the options:
On their website, Asiana Airlines sells protected connecting flights. As you can see, some connecting flights are partly operated by other airlines. This is a common practice. Airlines often share their flights. You are still protected if a part of your connecting flight is operated by another airline.
For example, the first option is wholly operated by Asiana Airlines. But the second option is partly operated by British Airlines. If this matters to you, if you want to be on an airplane of Asiana Airlines, you must be paying attention to details like these.
Notice that total flight duration, number of stops and price also vary.
6.2 Self-Transfer Flights with Asiana Airlines
But what if my itinerary is more complex?
What if Bangkok is not my final destination?
I want to fly from London to Bangkok, and then, from Bangkok onwards to Phuket, where I have booked a stay at a beach-front resort. But before that, I want to spend two days in Bangkok, to explore the city.
How to book such a flight?
- I will book a connecting flight to Bangkok, like in the example above. I am taking the cheapest option, the first one, which arrives in Bangkok at 11:10 pm.
- And then I visit kiwi.com, skyscanner.net or some other flight search website, and book a flight from Bangkok to Phuket. Leaving myself, let’s say, 2 days in Bangkok. You can also book directly from airline.
My London — Bangkok connecting flight is airline-protected. If the first leg is delayed or cancelled, Asiana Airlines will will book me on another connecting flight for free. However, the last flight, Bangkok – Phuket, includes a self-transfer and a stopover in Bangkok. This is a separate flight — I will need to check in for it separately, and check in my luggage as well. All of it takes time.
If you are booking such a flight, then don’t risk with short layovers. If you don’t have enough time for your self-transfer layover / stopover, you won’t make it in time to this last flight — it’s your responsibility to make it.
