1

Is It Protected?

Yes, it’s a protected connection.

Traditional airlines sell airline-protected connecting flights. It’s more convenient and more safe than self-transfer flights. You don’t need a visa for connecting flights like this.

Unless you book flights separately.

Baggage Rules

Airline takes care of your baggage.

Mostly, you will check in baggage only once — you won’t have to recheck baggage for every flight. This is how it works with full-service airlines and airline-protected connecting flights.

Baggage allowance depends on the ticket, destination and occasionally some other factors.

Travel Insurance

Make your trip more safe.

Add travel insurance right away. Protect yourself against possible itinerary changes later right from the very beginning. Insurance must be for the duration of the trip.

1. Aeromexico Connecting Flights

Aeromexico is a full-service traditional airline.

Just like any other full service airline, Aeromexico offers connecting flights. Airline-protected connecting flights is the biggest difference between traditional and low-cost airlines. Connecting flights like these are better than self-transfers (which are offered by low-cost carriers). And this is why so many choose to fly with traditional airlines, even if low-cost airlines offer cheaper flights.

Airline-protected connecting flights are:

  • More safe. Your airline takes care of flight problems.
  • More convenient. Baggage transfer is automatic.
  • Easier to book. You book several flights as a single journey.

Yes, Aeromexico sells airline-protected connecting flights.

1.1 Connecting Flights, One Airline

In some situations, your connecting flight will be operated only by Aeromexico.

Wait? Isn’t that a norm? No, not always. More on that below.

In some situations all the legs of your connecting flight will be operated by the same airline. You will have two or more flights and all of them will be operated by Aeromexico. These will be Aeromexico airplanes and Aeromexico staff. Note, that it’s not always the case.

1.2 Aeromexico Codeshare Partners

Sometimes airlines share their flights.

They do so to widen their flight network.

So, here’s an example. You have a connecting flight booked from Aeromexico, but it might be operated by another airline. This is common. You may have to fly with another airline, on their airplane. Connecting flights with different airlines is nothing unusual. These kind of flights are called codeshare flights, and airlines collaborating — codeshare partners.

What you should know is that:

  • If you miss a connecting flight through no fault of your own, it’s the responsibility of Aeromexico. For example, your previous flight was delayed or cancelled. And that lead to missed connection. In this case, you should contact Aeromexico and ask for a solution. As long as it’s a Aeromexico connection booked from Aeromexico (in this case they are called marketing airline), they are responsible for finding solutions — mostly it will be a new ticket completely free of charge.
  • If your flight is heavily delayed, cancelled or overbooked, compensation is paid by airline operating this particular flight. If it’s operated by some other airline, not Aeromexico, then they are called operating airline — they have to pay compensation when it’s due.

See a list of Aeromexico codeshare partners here.

2. What If Aeromexico Cancels a Flight?

Why Aeromexico is cancelling their flights.

The reasons are the same for every airline. Mostly it’s bad weather, staff shortages, strikes, technical problems, airport congestion and security issues.

2.1 One of Your Flights Is Cancelled

Aeromexico is a Mexican airline.

According to the EU Regulation 261/2004, they must:

  • Offer you a choice between a new flight and full refund.
  • Offer you assistance at the airport (you have a right to care).

This applies to their flights departing from Europe.

And if as a result you’re going to miss your connecting flight, it’s the airline’s responsibility to offer you an alternative flight to your final destination. No that, for flights departing from Europe, you must be given the second option as well — a full refund to your bank account.

You may have a right to compensation (more on this below).

2.2 All Your Flights Are Cancelled

Overall, for you as a passenger, the options are the same.

According to the EU Regulation 261/2004, Aeromexico must:

  • Offer you a choice between a new flight and full refund.
  • Offer you assistance at the airport if it’s a last-minute cancellation and you are already at the airport (you have a right to care).

The refund part applies to flights departing from Europe.

Refund must be paid within seven days.

You may have a right to EU flight cancellation compensation.

2.3 Aeromexico Refund for Cancellation

Yes, you have a right to ask for a refund.

If your flight departs from Europe, you can ask for a refund instead of a new flight. If you don’t wish to travel anymore or the new flight doesn’t fit your travel plans, you can opt for a refund. It has to be paid in full, to your bank account.

The refund must be paid within seven days.

You don’t have to accept any vouchers.

3. Aeromexico Missed Connecting Flight

Why people miss their connecting flights?

The reasons might be very simple — such as a silly mistake. You may simply make a mistake and wait at the wrong gate or fall asleep while waiting for flight. Or, your previous flight was late. Or, there were long queues at the airport.

3.1 What Happens If You Miss Aeromexico Connection?

If it’s your fault that it happened — it’s your responsibility.

If it’s not your fault, then your airline has to take care of that. If you booked a flight from Aeromexico, it doesn’t even matter if the flight is operated by Aeromexico or not, you should contact Aeromexico. It’s their responsibility to find a solution. You missed a connecting flight (through no fault of your own), the airline must offer you a solution.

According to the EU Regulation 261/2004, they must:

  • Take you to your final destination as soon as possible.
  • Offer you assistance at the airport (you have a right to care).

With Aeromexico, some of this apply only to flights from Europe.

3.2 Right to Compensation from Aeromexico

Sometimes you have a right to compensation.

If your Aeromexico flight:

  1. Departs from the EU, EEA or UK,
  2. Arrives to destination 3 or more hours late,
  3. Is delayed or cancelled due to the fault of the airline

Then you might be entitled to flight compensation from Aeromexico.

3.3 Right to Care from Aeromexico

On Aeromexico flights from Europe you have a right to care.

According to the EU Regulation 261/2004 airline should provide:

  • Free food and drinks in a reasonable relation to the waiting time.
  • Free hotel accommodation if a stay of one or more nights is necessary.
  • Free airport transfer to hotel and back.
  • Plus, two telephone calls, telex or fax messages, or e-mails. So that you can get in touch with your loved ones and tell them about changes in your travel plans. This is airline’s responsibility to offer this.

With Aeromexico the regulation applies only to flights departing from European airports. With European airlines, like KLMLOT Polish AirlinesWizz Air and British Airways, it applies to all their flights.

When it comes to air passenger rights, unless otherwise stated, we talk about air passenger rights in the EU, EEA and UK. When we say Europe or European, we mean EU, EEA or UK. This is done for the simplicity, since the according laws in these countries are about the same.

4. How to Book Connecting Flights with Aeromexico?

You can do it directly from Aeromexico or via a third-party.

Use the official web page of Aeromexico to buy their connecting flights. Alternatively, you can use flight search sites and third party flight sellers to buy Aeromexico connecting flights. However, when in doubts, we would recommend you to stick to the official website — it’s safer that way.

How to Book?

Airline website (directly).

This is the easiest way to book a connecting flight. It’s also the safest way to book a connection. You make a single booking, have a single reservation code and the booking includes several flights. Sometimes they are all with one airline, other times – two or more. Anyway, in this case, you can be 100% sure that you have a proper connecting flight.

Other Option

Flight booking websites.

Few examples: skyscanner.net, expedia.com, momondo.com.

Pay attention to the details. Because some of these sites are only search engines, and sellers are other websites. Apart from that, they often sell both airline-protected connecting flights and self-transfer flights. If it’s a self-transfer, know that it comes with its own risks, and there are things you should take into account. Self-transfer is not the same thing as airline-protected transfer.

For extra protection, buy also a travel insurance covering flight disruptions, or book with sites like kiwi.com, who offer extra protection.

With kiwi.com you are more protected than normally.

5. Aeromexico Connecting Flights: Baggage

Since Aeromexico is a traditional airline, everything’s very easy.

Baggage rules on connecting flights with Aeromexico are simple.

In short, Aeromexico takes care of your baggage. You check in your luggage at your origin airport. In most cases, it will be sent to your final destination. Unless you have a self-transfer flight (two or more flights booked separately). Or you are traveling through a country that requires everyone to collect and recheck their baggage (e.g., USA).

If you aren’t sure about your luggage, ask at the baggage drop or check in.

5.1 Baggage Transfer: Different Airlines

What happens if there are several airlines?

What if one of your flights is operated by different airline, not Aeromexico? As we already talked, you may experience this, because Aeromexico does share some of its flights with its codeshare partners. In this situation the rules are the same — your baggage is being taken care of by an airline. In most situations, you won’t have to worry about it.

5.2 Aeromexico Free Baggage Allowance

Baggage allowance varies — it’s not the same on all flights.

It depends on the airline, travel class and destination.

To see your baggage allowance, check your Aeromexico booking confirmation. When you are only booking an Aeromexico connecting flight, you can see baggage allowance when you are choosing your flight and travel class.

5.3 Economy Light

This is the cheapest option for long-haul flights.

Economy Light comes without free baggage allowance.

We see this all across the industry. Full-service traditional airlines are offering also tickets without free checked baggage allowance. The wording is also often the same — Economy Light. So, if you see this, most likely it’s without checked baggage (carry on baggage only).

Aeromexico offers something similar to Economy Light. It’s called “Basic”. This travel class is not available on all flights, though.

6. Connecting Flight Examples

Here are two connecting flight examples with Aeromexico.

6.1 Protected Connecting Flights with Aeromexico (Most Common)

For this example I’ll be using the website of Aeromexico.

For example, I want to fly from London to Mexico City.

I’ve searched for flights for September 20, and these are my options:

London - Mexico City Connecting Flight with Aeromexico
London – Mexico City Connecting Flight with Aeromexico

On their website Aeromexico sells only protected connecting flights. However, as we can see, not all of the flights from London to Mexico City are operated by Aeromexico. All of these connecting flights have a layover in Madrid. The airline which is operating this first flight (London — Madrid) is Air Europa, one of Aeromexico codeshare partners.

Pay attention to total flight duration, number of stops and price, too.

No 1 option is the cheapest, and also the shortest flight.

6.2 Self-Transfer Flights with Aeromexico

Let’s see what happens if Mexico City is not my final destination.

You want to fly from London to Mexico City, and from Mexico City onwards to Cancun, where you have booked a stay at an all-inclusive resort on the beach. But before that you want to spend a day in Mexico City, to visit the nearby pyramids of Teotihuacan.

  1. You are booking a connecting flight to Mexico City, like in the example above. For example, you’re taking one of the cheapest options, the first one, which arrives in Mexico City at 5:10 am.
  2. And then you go to kiwi.com, or some other flight booking website, and book a flight from Mexico City to Cancun. Leaving yourself, let’s say, 30 hours in Mexico City (a stopover in Mexico City). You may book directly from airline. And you may choose to have also a longer stopover.

Until Mexico City you have an airline-protected connecting flight. If your first flight is delayed or cancelled, Aeromexico will put you on another flight for free. However, the last leg, Mexico City – Cancun, includes a self-transfer layover (a stopover, to be more precise). You have to check in for this flight separately.

Take all of this into account when making a reservation.

Don’t risk with super short layovers, if you’re booking a self transfer. A 45-minute layover might be totally okay with protected connecting flights, but it’s a very, very bad idea with self transfer flights.

What is your experience with Aeromexico? Have you ever missed a connecting flight with Aeromexico? How did the airline solve this? Did you receive compensation from Aeromexico?
