UK / EU Flight Compensation

We have several articles on these topics.

Here is a full guide on UK / EU flight compensation regulation. There we talk about all situations, when you can get compensation from the airline and when you have a right to care. We also have separate guides on what to do if you miss connection due to delaystrike, or cancellation of one of your flights.

Here, in this article, we will focus more on the compensation – UK / EU Missed connecting flight compensation.

1. Wizz Air Missed Connecting Flight Compensation

Wizz Air is a Hungarian ultra-low-cost airline.

Just like many other low-cost airlines, Wizz Air doesn’t offer connecting flights.

The only way to book a connecting flight with Wizz Air is to plan the connection yourself, and book all the flights separately. Each of these flights will have individual booking reference, meaning these are separate flights.

If you miss your Wizz Air connection, you won’t be entitled to missed flight compensation. Because your connection is not protected by the airline. Simply because the airline doesn’t offer such a service. But you might get other type of compensation – for flight delay or cancellation.

To sum it up, you can’t get missed connecting flight compensation when traveling with Wizz Air. But you might be entitled to flight delay or cancellation compensation.

1.1 European and non-European airlines

The country of origin of your airline matters.

When flying with a European carrier (airline registered in the EU, EEA, UK), you are protected on all their flights. If you are traveling with Wizz Air, you are protected on all of its flights, as it’s an airline registered in the EU.

But what if it’s a non-European carrier, such as El Al, Turkish Airlines, or Pegasus? Then you are protected only on flights departing FROM Europe. As these are not European airlines, European regulations only work when a flight is from a European airport.

Remember that Wizz Air has subsidiaries in several countries, including the UAE. Keep in mind that Wizz Air Abu Dhabi is a non-European airline. With Wizz Air Abu Dhabi, the regulations apply only to its flights from Europe.

1.2 Self-Transfer Flights

Wizz Air doesn’t sell protected connecting flights.

In contrast to traditional airlines, Wizz Air does not provide protected connections. The only option for travelers wishing to book a connection through them is by buying multiple tickets separately and changing planes on their own.

You might already know that a self-transfer flight places the responsibility on the passenger to make the connection, while an airline-protected connecting flight places the responsibility on the airline to ensure the passenger makes the connection.

As Wizz Air only offers self transfer flights, you are 100% responsible for making in time for your Wizz Air connection. If you miss it, the airline won’t be responsible for it. You won’t get compensation for this flight, nor a new flight ticket. As you can see, you are less protected with self transfers.

However, you might make your self transfer safer when booking it using kiwi.com. Learn more here.

To sum up:

  • If you miss you connection, you won’t get a new flight to your destination for free. Airlines are not responsible for self-transfer flights.
  • If your flight is not delayed for the minimum 3 hours, you can’t get compensation either. Even if it makes you miss your next flight. All your flights are separate flights, and the connection is not protected by the airline.

When it comes to air passenger rights, unless otherwise stated, we talk about air passenger rights in the EU, EEA and UK. When we say Europe or European, we mean EU, EEA or UK. This is done for the simplicity, since the according laws in these countries are about the same.

1.3 Right to Compensation from Wizz Air

You can’t get compensation for your Wizz Air missed connection.

But you might get other type of compensation, such as:

  • Flight delay compensation;
  • Flight cancellation compensation;
  • Denied boarding compensation.

According to European regulations, if your flight was unexpectedly delayed by more than three hours or cancelled with less than two weeks notice, you may be eligible for compensation.

Keep in mind that European flight compensation is not automatic – you may need to take steps towards collecting your compensation; whether it’s reaching out to the airline directly, filing a complaint with an appropriate governing body or enlisting the help of a certified flight claim company.

Keep in mind that your flight must be delayed or cancelled due to the airline’s fault, not extraordinary circumstances (e.g., bad weather).

2. How Much Compensation Can You Claim for Your Wizz Air Flight?

Mostly it’s 250, 400 or 600 euro per person.

The amounts are regulated by flight compensation regulations.

Compensation amount depends on the distance of your flight.

The longer the flight, the more you can get.

  • 250 EUR – if the flight distance is less than 1500 km;
  • 400 EUR – if the flight distance is between 1500 and 3500 km;
  • 600 EUR – if the flight distance is more than 3500 km.

3. How to File a Claim for a Disrupted Wizz Air Flight?

While you can’t get compensation for your missed Wizz Air connection, you might be entitled to other types of compensation (flight delay, flight cancellation or denied boarding compensation).

How to claim flight compensation from Wizz Air?

There are two options:

  1. You can file a claim with compensation company.
  2. Or, you can do it all on your own.

If you choose the latter (option number 2):

  • Before anything else, make sure your flight is qualified for compensation. If the airline is to blame for your flight delay or cancellation, you are entitled to compensation. Learn more here.
  • If you believe that you are entitled to a compensation for your disrupted flight, visit Wizz Air’s website, log into your account, and file a compensation claim using the complaint form provided.
  • To file your claim, you’ll need to present evidence for the cancellation or delay that occurred. This can take form of boarding passes, flight times, ticket numbers, length and cause of delay/cancellation. Make sure all information is accurate in order to get the best possible outcome from your case!
  • After Wizz Air has successfully obtained your application and all related documentation, they will examine it to decide if you are eligible for compensation. Please be aware that the response time might take up to 30 days.
  • Flight compensation must be paid to your bank account. In order to receive your compensation, please be sure to include bank account details.
  • Keep in mind that you don’t have to accept any vouchers from Wizz Air.
  • If you are unsatisfied with the way your complaint was handled or its resolution, don’t hesitate to file it on Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) platform. Or work with a flight compensation company (see Option No 1).

4. Right to Care from Wizz Air

On all Wizz Air flights you have a right to care.

With Wizz Air Abu Dhabi it applies to flights from Europe.

According to the EU Regulation 261/2004, airline should provide:

  • Free food and drinks in a reasonable relation to the waiting time.
  • Free hotel accommodation if a stay of one or more nights is necessary.
  • Free airport transfer to hotel and back.
  • Plus, two telephone calls, telex or fax messages, or e-mails. You have a right to means of communication, so you can get in touch with whomever you may want to get in touch (to let them know about these flight changes).

It applies to all domestic and international flights with Wizz Air. Again, it’s because Wizz Air is a European airline. With non-European airlines it applies only to flights departing from European airports. Wizz Air Abu Dhabi is a non-European airline.

5. Tips on Flight Delays and Missed Connections

The more informed you are, the better.

  • When booking a self transfer, leave yourself plenty of time between the flights. This way, even if your first flight is delayed, you’ll still be able to make it onto the next one!
  • By checking the airline or airport’s website for any potential warnings about delays and cancellations before leaving for your flight, you can help minimize wasted time. Furthermore, knowing what to expect will also make you feel more in control.
  • Use FlightStats. It’s a flight tracking app with real-time updates, custom maps to visualize your trip progress, and detailed delay data. You can track the exact location, flight status, and estimated arrival time of a flight. This helps you to stay informed about your flight’s progress and potential delays.
  • Buy travel insurance, especially if you have a self transfer flight. Travel insurance can provide peace of mind, knowing that you are protected in the event of unexpected events or problems during your trip. If you have to re-book another ticket, travel insurance can cover that expense along with additional fees such as hotel and transportation costs too.
  • Know your rights! Having a clear understanding of your air passenger rights can help you navigate potential issues and ensure that you receive fair treatment in the event of any problems during your flight.
